What's bothering you?

The perk of being a Media Medic (me) is that there is so much interesting content to blog about. I usually choose topics related to things which I have personally come across, something trending in social media related to health, something a friend or patient is stressed about or whatever Dr Oz is talking about!

So, as you can imagine, I had reservations about doing yet another cancer post. It is Breast Cancer month though so I have to mention that recently one of my favourite E! presenters and reality stars Giuliana Rancic admitted on TV of suffering of breast cancer. Wow. Just comes to show, it can happen to anyone. Take Home Message: Monthly self-breast exams are important!

On to something else, over the weekend I witnessed some people getting totally sloshed (cool talk for inebriated). And the following day instead of acting like normal hungover people they just began drinking again that morning till the next morning! Names and location will remain confidential of course. I will have to ask Men's Health Magazine to do a feature about alcoholism. I really think our generation drinks way more than previous generations. Or is that what they all said? Well, quick way to find out if you do suffer from alcoholism: Can you answer the following CAGE questions? C-Have you ever tried to Cut down? A- Do you get Angry when someone asks you about your drinking? G- Have you ever felt Guilty for missing out on something because you were too drunk or hungover to go? E- Have you ever woken up and you need a drink to get going or to 'cure your hangover'? (Early morning). If you answered 2 out of 4...you have a problem! AA dude.

My latest article in the New African Woman is about the Vagina. Yes, I said it. And yes, i wrote 1500 words about it. It even made it to the Hot Topic section of the magazine. It's basically all-you-need to know about the health down below. Be sure to look out for that wonderful UK distributed mag!

My next article will cover insomnia. I know a lot has been said already but according to Connectamarillo 23% of the workforce suffers from it and it is affecting productivity of the workforce. Will let you know what you can do to help yourself snooze like an angel. All night. Every Night.

Lastly, I am currently moving to a new hospital somewhere in a beautiful county-side. I have had quite an experience at the government hospital in the concrete jungle of Nairobi for the last year. The new place is a mission hospital. I am quite childishly excited about the new experience, then i will let you know what the main differences between public and private sector is...besides the obvious payment difference. African health needs special considerations.

I am open to any questions or anything you would like discussed at length. Whatever is bothering you!

Stay well!

  1. please can you do a topic on all the things they DONT tell you about pregnancy?! Geez people lie!!!!!! Expose the truth mayn! - a very pregnant woman!

  2. That would be very interesting and think i will get cracking. Most pregnant women read a lot of literature on the subject and frequently get conflicting and confusing advice. Regular check-ups are better than self-diagnosing every hiccup for electrolyte imbalance and hence eat more banana's or something like that!

I will be glad to demystify the myths, medically speaking.

    Hie Dr Stee

I think my 4 month old daughter has clubfoot. It seems to be affecting only her left foot,i am yet to take her to the doctor but im already so worried about it. I read that it can be effectively cured,i want to know what to expect and whether there are any other conditions similar to clubfoot but arent?

  4. Dear Natsai,
There's no point sitting at home worrying. Take the child to a specialist as soon as possible and get his expert opinion before you get sick thinking of all the possibilities. It could be nothing! So I will write about club foot when you know for sure!

Saving Mandy

When you have influence, it is your duty to stand up for others and help others up too We had so much in common.  We were both born and grew up in the same sleepy hometown of Bulawayo, almost same neighborhood. We attended the same high school, some years apart, but both proud and loud Convent girls. At some point, we must have taken the same Parklands surburb bus from City Hall to home. Our siblings almost same age-groups; our families and friends intertwined all the way back to roots in Dombodema rural home. We both went on to study medicine, she did dentistry, I did MBChB. But eventually we both did a masters in Public Health in the same programme at the University of Zimbabwe. We both got married and set up home in Harare. Bulawayo girls stick together when they arrive in the big bad city. When I had Anashe, she had Siyabonga. We were both pregnant in 2018. Being senior medical professionals we both had access to the “best” medical care. We both had Cesarian Sections...

Waiting for Healing: The Quiet Crisis at Parirenyatwa Radiotherapy Centre

Every morning, before Harare has woken up, there is already a line forming. Not a short or orderly queue that moves with predictable rhythm. No, a long, patient, aching line of people who have nowhere else to go. I drop off my relative there each weekday at the Radiotherapy Centre at Parirenyatwa Hospital. He is battling a brain tumor. That alone is a heavy sentence to carry. But it is not the only burden he carries. Because before treatment comes waiting. And before waiting comes arriving early enough to have a chance. The Queue That Starts at Midnight There are two queues. One for those who can pay or who have been marked as priority. And one for everyone else. Both queues are unpredictable. You can wait for hours on any unsuspecting day. By midnight, people are already gathering. They sit or lie down holding their place in a tent outside the centre. Names are written down and some have made a business of queueing for others. Many have travelled from outside the capital city. Fro...

Private School Parenting Is Becoming a Performance Sport

Last term, I became burnt out from parenting. Not from loving my children...that part comes easily. I was burnt out from the school runs, timetables, WhatsApp groups, requests, competitions, forgotten costumes, sports fixtures, lunchboxes, reading logs, projects, and the invisible pressure to keep up with everybody else’s very full lives. And whilst I genuinely loved being part of my children’s world, somewhere in all of it...I lost myself. Not dramatically. Quietly. In ways that disturbed me. I noticed how much of my mental energy was being consumed by managing, anticipating, organizing, remembering, rushing, comparing, and performing motherhood instead of actually living it. So this term, I want to do things differently. Not perfectly. Just differently. I want less noise. Less pressure. Less performing. This year, I will not be swept up by the crowd enrolling children into every possible extra activity simply because everyone else is doing it. My children will do art because they gen...
