1. I have been fascinated by the Group Page created for Zimbabweans which has seemed to have received overnight success...gaining around 4000 new members in just today alone. Its called 'You know you are Zimbabwean when/if . I'm sure every nationality has their own 'You know you are's but this one is kinda special because Zimbo's all live so far from home. Having one of the highest percentage population diaspora. This is a great way to remember old times and laugh our brains out. (as i did in my neighbourhood cafe) (And how was I even going to explain I was laughing at the name Breastroke Ncube) Dead!
2. On the whole Zim nostalgia I impulsively bought a book for myself (looking for a gift for a friend). The Boy Next Door by Irene Sabatini. I'm already on page 104 and its only been a couple of hours since my possession. Its a juicy juicy read especially since it has these references of places I grew up in. The JACARANDA trees and Meikles for instance. Im hopeless home sick!
3. Kenyan Roads! I recently started driving in Nairobi. Nightmare. Its the roundabouts! The angry angry drivers as if its your fault fuel went up to 115bob. And my instructor basically just said, "accelerator, brakes, clutch." Lets go. I'm like...'what?' Blank stare response. "Let's go." So I went. Still alive.
4. Blankets and Wine. Sigh. A concept that started a while ago where Nairobi's elite meet up every month in a field, get blankets and wine (dah) and watch live performances by celebrated musicians around Africa then meet up at the afterparty and get sloshed. Its a Gossip Girl kinda affair with everyone in designer and looking oh-so GQ. It's huge here.
5. I am working in Obstetrics and gynaecology department right now of my humble government hospital set up. I do believe the worse the hospital, the better the doctor. Sometimes we treat people with no money. They hang around for days after operations saying they are 'waiting' for money. Until we just get fed up and discharge them with a social services waiver. Its rewarding..but it can also be annoying. Waiting for who? There was one man who just stayed on for months until he was hired as a cleaner. Harrison still greets me every time I walk past.
6. It rained momentarily today. This global warming thing is keraazy.
7. I have started writing for Skyhost magazine...watch the space. Its the in-flight mag of Air Zimbabwe (yes there is an Air Zimbabwe)..but the new team wants a more lifestyle mag feel. My column is called The Clinic with Dr Dube. Its gonna be available in Zimbabwe and the UK...and of course if you happen to fly with Air Zimbabwe. So if for anything, do it for the magazine!
8. You know what I really really love about Kenya? The earrings!!! Splurged on 4 beautiful pairs today, 100bob a piece. There's this place on Moi Avenue. This should be a tourist must-see! And in the spirit of this being a travelogue- you gotto go to that little shop people!
9. Travelled to Khwisero in western Kenya about two weeks ago with a group from my church for a medical mission. There should be a blog post about this experience. But my blog posts are generally too long and the 13 followers have been very patient with my procrastinating ways. It was simply terrific in a 'seeing-300-patients-in2-days-but-i-feel-like-im-saving-the-world-even-though-i-have-developed-carpel-tunnel-syndrome' kinda way. One of the headmasters at one of the primary schools we set up in suggested we leave one of the doctors for a week. I looked down and silently side-stepped so that I was out of visual range at that moment. The place is remote. Dude!
10. I'm gonna take my blog more seriously from now on. Gonna try to keep each post short, informative and still very Stee. Was this short? I don't think I know the definition. My last tid-bit: Traveling doesn't mean planes and buses. It could be entering that museum in your town and looking around. It's not just for tourists! And who said you need to know anything about art to venture into Art Galleries? Try something new this weekend! Yes, you!
:)
